Jane and Tom’s Wedding Gift to their daughter.  Grandma’s Quilt.

In the beginning of June, Jane and Tom and their incredible sweet lab Carl, met with me at Asheville Quilt Co. so I could give them an estimate for repairing, backing and hand quilting a lovely 80-year-old quilt. The quilt was made by Tom’s mom.  One side was unfinished.  Since we needed to find a current fabric that would blend with the older fabric, we relied on Addy (employee supreme) quickly whisked around the shop and chose the perfect fabric!

I chose the soft brown (on the left) to do the repairs and ultimately to do the hand stitching.

I carefully removed any of the damaged squares and replaced them with vintage fabrics from my stash. It takes as long to carefully remove the stitches and lift out the damaged fabric as it does to sew the new piece in place.  All done by hand, of course.

 

 

 

 

 

After sewing the new material in place, it was time to add the missing fourth boarder and layer the quilt.  

I hand quilted it with 50,000 plus stitches.  It took two and a half spools of Mettler 40 weight cotton thread.  As difficult as this quilt was to repair and hand quilt, it was an absolute joy. The look on Jane and Tom’s face when they saw the finished project filled my heart. I wish the couple that receives it have a life on joy and happiness together!
